Need Help With That Case?

One thing I’ve learned after a decade of teaching Functional Medicine seminars to an international audience is that mastering the concepts and applications of natural medicine happens one case at a time. And no matter how long you’ve been in the game, that complex case that will stump you is just around the corner.

Over the last few years I’ve coached newbies on the oh-so-critical fundamentals, and seasoned vets on the nuances of neurology and immunology.

I think we all understand that attending a seminar, or webinar, is just the beginning. Things can sound crystal clear as you hear it in a learning environment, but when you get back to practice, how are you expected to apply what you just learned in real-time, with real clients? It’s a challenge we all face.

FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE MENTORING

  • You Need a Clinical Model That Helps You Understand Your Clients Metabolic Foundation

Having a mental framework of fundamental physiology helps you pick the right starting point with any client. Human function is systems based, with some systems predicated on the integrity of others that are more foundational.

  • Functional Blood Chemistry Analysis

No diagnostic strategy rivals blood labs for assessing the fundamentals. Do you know the most common lab patterns to screen for? Can you spot the nuances in these lab patterns that can impact you recommendations?

  • Saliva Testing

Saliva is the preferred testing method for adrenal dysfunction, stress handling capacity and reproductive hormones. But which panel do you use if your clients is a man or a woman? And does a woman’s reproductive life-stage make a difference to what tests to order? And how do you interpret the myriad of possible patterns you can see?

  • Stool testing

There are a half dozen or more labs that offer stool testing. Is it really necessary? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the different technologies the labs use? And how do you manage leaky infected guts? SIBO? Irritable bowel?

  • Cyrex Labs

Cyrex Labs is THE lab for gluten sensitivity, gluten cross-reactivity, barrier system compromise, autoimmune testing, food sensitivities, environmental reactivity/multiple chemical sensitivity and multiple viral and stealth pathogens. Knowing which labs to order and how to apply the data requires at least a basic understanding of immunology. I can help.

  • Mold Toxicity and MARCONS

Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome is very common among clients with chronic illness and fatigue. How do you manage mold, mycotoxin loads and antibiotic resistance sinus infections to help these people recover>

  • How do I put all this together in a way that makes sense?

Most clients have more than one issue. Clinical success sometimes comes down to have a reliable, but flexible, system that helps you prioritize and walk your client though a process.

STOP STRUGGLING TO IMPLEMENT YOUR EXPERTISE

Clinical coaching sessions are scheduled in 60-minute increments. Depending on your current level of knowledge that’s enough to go through 2-3 cases (as long as you’re prepared ahead of time). If a case is really complex, or this is all new to you, we might take the hour to really drill down on a single case so you feel comfortable.

HERE'S HOW IT WORKS

  • STEP 1: You send me your clients intake form, Metabolic Assessment Form and labs

I need the data the day before our call so I can review your case(s) ahead of time. If you don’t have a Metabolic Assessment Form I can provide one for you. If you need an option to create a Functional Blood Chemistry Analysis from the lab’s raw data then I can help there too (this one’s a little extra)

  • STEP 2: On the call I will ask you to tell me what you see and think

This helps me see your thought process and where you are in developing your clinical skills. (I have no doubt you know some stuff I don’t know!)

  • STEP 3: I will take you through the case as I would do it in my own practice

We will use the same clinical framework I use with my clients and make sure you understand what I am seeing and why. We do this in an orderly and progressive way, beginning with the most fundamentals functions before we move forward.

  • STEP 4: I will share with you the diet and nutritional strategies I would use.

I use mostly products from Apex Energetics, but that doesn’t mean you have to. If you don’t then we will try to find complementary products in your supplement lines. For transparency sakes, I teach Functional Medicine concepts and principles for Apex Energetics but do not receive reimbursement or kickbacks if you start, or currently use Apex products.

  • STEP 5: We will talk about any other tests that your client might need

I use mostly products from Apex Energetics, but that doesn’t mean you have to. If you don’t then we will try to find complementary products in your supplement lines. For transparency sakes, I teach Functional Medicine concepts and principles for Apex Energetics but do not receive reimbursement or kickbacks if you start, or currently use Apex products.

  • STEP 6: Finally we will talk about how to communicate your findings

Creating buy in and follow through is a skill and sometimes how you say something is as important as what you say. You may be en expert here, but if not I will share how I would present the findings if I were doing the talking.

  • STEP 7: We schedule your next call because I know you will be happy!

We can keep this is a simple or make it as complex as you need it to be. In my experience it only takes a dozen or so cases before most docs start to feel like they’re in the zone on the basics. If you’ve got the basics on standard labs, then we can move on to saliva panels, stool reports and more. It’s all up to you.
